Announcing Aetherica

Something new for 2009! Some of the people who brought you Sectus 2007 and Accio 2005 have joined forces with people of equally dubious sanity levels from the Tolkien Society and science fiction conventions to bring you Aetherica, a brand new fantasy convention taking place in the medieval city of Chester, England on June 19th – 21st, 2009.

The Crowne Plaza Hotel in the centre of Chester will play host to a weekend of diverse fantasy-themed programming, ranging from presentations and panels to craft workshops and team building activities. Just as fantasy ranges from fairy tales to complex epics, so Aetherica will offer everything from in-depth literary analysis to whimsical games.

Guests of honour include Peter Beagle, a superb author best known for his novel, The Last Unicorn who has been described as "America’s greatest living fantasist," and Joe Abercrombie, a critically acclaimed new talent whose books have been labelled as "edgy", "humorous" and "compelling, with a gritty, real-life feel."

Current membership rates are:
Adults: £35 (until November 16th 2008)
Juniors (5-18): £25
Infants (under 5): £5
Please see our website (www.aetherica.org/faq) for more details on the rates and price rises.

For more information about the convention, to join or to book a hotel room, see the website. We also have an LJ: aetherica.

Important Announcement

I regret to announce that, for personal reasons, I am unable to continue as Chair of Sectus 2009. I have tried very hard to find a way for the event to go ahead without me, but unfortunately this has not proved possible. We have therefore had to make the decision to cancel Sectus 2009.

Anyone already registered for the conference will receive a full refund within the next few days.

Sectus 2007 was an amazing event, and it was an honour and a pleasure to have the opportunity to organise it. I had high hopes for 2009, so this has been a difficult decision and I am deeply saddened by this outcome.

Thank you for your past support, and I hope that you enjoy the numerous other conferences being organised.

All the best,

Elanor Isolda
Chair, Sectus Ltd

Announcing: Sectus 2009!

Following on the success of Sectus 2007 in London, we are pleased to present Sectus 2009, a four-day Harry Potter convention for adults. Set in a magnificent Grade II listed castle in Britain, this will be a unique event, combining a formal conference with a celebration of one of the best-loved fantasy series of all time. What's better than spending four days discussing the books, meeting your fellow fans and gallivanting around a Welsh castle?

Sectus 2009 will take place at Bodelwyddan Castle from June 26-29, 2009. As a benefit to those who book early, paying in installments is available during the first Sectus pay period – so from the time registration opens until October 31st, 2008. After this date, you must have paid your registration in full. Supporting members are those who wish to receive official Sectus pre-event emails and a mailed copy of the registration pack, but are not considered registered attendants of the conference. Supporting members who decide to register later need only pay the difference between said membership fee and the registration price. Both options are subject to terms and conditions. See our website for more details.

Bodelwyddan Castle is a fully-equipped, restored castle with purpose-built rooms that feature all the modern amenities in an historic setting. In addition to having several magnificent period drawing and meeting rooms, Bodelwyddan Castle is home to the National Portrait Gallery's Victorian collection. Sectus 2009 will host a variety of on-site informal programming, including archery, scavenger hunts and evening entertainment, taking full advantage of Bodelwyddan Castle's spacious grounds and multiple on-site bars and meeting rooms.

Sectus 2009 will feature the same variety of programming that made the first event so popular - a mix of academic presentations and informal discussions of canon and fandom-related topics. At Sectus we're open to any kind of programming our attendees are interested in covering, whether it be fanfiction, shipping, character development or the series' real world applications. Let us know what you'd like to see at Sectus 2009 when you register - we want the programming to reflect what our attendees are interested in!

Sectus is an unofficial Harry Potter convention that is entirely not-for-profit. After a very successful partnership with Book Aid International, all proceeds of Sectus 2009 will go towards SOS Children's Villages UK, a branch of the world's largest orphans' charity, which helps homeless children, in particular those with HIV/AIDS.

Space at Sectus 2009 is limited, so register now to guarantee yourself a spot! As a special offer, those who book before the New Year will be appropriated the best rooms at the venue. Registration for Sectus is subject to terms and conditions which are available on our website.
Please visit our website, http://www.sectus.org for more information on the event, registering and advertising with us.

The cost starts at £290, which includes registration and room and board for three nights, breakfast and evening meal for each day inclusive. Rates rise to £300 on November 1st, 2008 and then to £310 on February 1st, 2009. Room upgrades are available – see our website for details.

Souvenir Book

Just a reminder that souvenir book orders need to be in by this Sunday, August 19th (which also happens to be the most popular birthday among Sectus attendees!)

If you're willing to write a review of the event, even of a single presentation or informal meetup, or of the new book or your time in London, please send it to souvenir [at] sectus.org. Likewise, if you've written a review on LJ or anywhere else (however brief!) and you're happy for us to quote it, please send the text or a link over to us.

Please do consider submitting something - the more contributions we have, the more varied and interesting the souvenir book will be!

Sectus merchandise

There is a limited amount of Sectus merchandise still available, so if you missed out during the con you can still get your order in.

The items available are:

Skyline t-shirts, £10:
Standard XL
Ladies' M, L, XL

Skyline mugs, £5

You can also order a Souvenir Book online until August 19th.

A purely hypothetical question

The boxes aren't even unpacked and already the question is being asked..."So when's the next one?"

The trouble is, Sectus 2007 would be pretty hard to top wouldn't it? So if we do another Sectus, it won't use the usual formula. I'm not going to dig myself a hole by revealing details at this stage, but suffice it to say that my research is focusing on hiring a castle.

So, this is the part where I need your input.

Poll #1028916 Sectus 2009

Hypothetically, which date would you prefer for Sectus 2009? [Bear in mind that HPEF have a con in San Jose on July 23-26]

July 16 - 19
July 30 - August 2
August 6 - 9
August 13 - 16

Please note that we are promising nothing at this stage. This is a purely hypothetical question.

But in the event that it does go ahead, you'll hear about it here.

Could I please remind everyone that registration was CLOSED on 30th June!

Sectus is starting in 3 days and all the preparations are complete, so if you would like to attend but have not registered you will have to purchase day tickets at the door. Information about door rates are on the front page at http://www.sectus.org. Thanks for your understanding.

Those of you who have booked rooms at the Grafton Edwardian Raddison hotel with the Sectus Discount, please note. The rooms are not confirmed until you provide the hotel with your credit card details. They have sent out a couple of emails asking for this, but many of you have not yet responded. If you have booked a room at the hotel but have not yet given your credit card details, you are in danger of losing your discount or even your booking. Please contact them urgently.
